Re-evaluation does not mean mandatory replacement. It means assessing whether current equipment still aligns with current operational demands and understanding the gaps if it does not.
Document current mission profiles. What scenarios is the shield used in? How frequently? By which officers, in which roles? Have those scenarios changed since the shield was procured?
Map equipment performance against threats. What threat levels does the current shield address? Are those still the relevant threats? Have any new threat types emerged in the local environment?
Assess wear, degradation, and maintenance history. How has the shield held up over its service life? Are there visible signs of wear, delamination, or structural degradation? Has it been stored in conditions, heat, cold, humidity, that may have affected material performance without visible signs?
Test under realistic current conditions. How does the shield perform in the environments and scenarios it is now being asked to operate in? Extended carry, vehicle deployment, confined space movement, these may not have been the primary evaluation criteria when the shield was first assessed.
Compare against current standards. Would the shield pass ASTM E3347-25? Has it been submitted for verification? If not, understanding which elements of the standard it would and would not meet is useful context for assessing real-world performance gaps.
